“This change we have coming will be a disruption for our playerbase and on the general balance of the games,” says Plociennik. Their lack of popularity among fans is partly due to the steep learning curve they require for new players, and also because of how overpowered they are in their existing form as they give carrier players the ability to easily recon the entire map and send out multiple squadrons at a time. But by the game’s third year the carrier class was almost flatlining, with only 3-5% of the playerbase actually opting to use them at all.
A swell of interest in a new feature and a subsequent reduction in engagement is normal for a game of this type, as most players will try new content in the short term to decide if they like it or not.
